Lucas Marsh (Robert Mitchum) is an intern who wants to be a first-class doctor, not just a successful one, and he has no money to get there. He marries Kristina (Olivia de Havilland), a nurse with savings put aside over the years and a sure hand in the operating room, though he does not love her. Stanley Kramer follows the couple to a small town, where Lucas's practice grows and Kristina's patience is the thing wearing thin.
