In 1946, Alicia Huberman (Ingrid Bergman), the American daughter of a convicted German war criminal, is recruited by U.S. agent Devlin (Cary Grant) to spy on Nazis hiding in Brazil. Her orders are to win over Alexander Sebastian (Claude Rains), one of them, while Devlin, who has fallen for her, can only watch from the outside. Hitchcock keeps Alicia between the man she loves and the man she is told to charm.
