(1973)Directed by Lindsay Anderson184 min · RComedy, Music, Fantasy, Drama
“Smile while you’re makin’ it. Laugh while you’re takin’ it. Even though you’re fakin’ it. Nobody’s gonna know …”

Mick Travis (Malcolm McDowell) takes a job as a trainee coffee salesman and sets out across Britain, eager and sure that hard work will carry him up. Lindsay Anderson sends him through one improbable scene after another, and nearly every figure he meets, among them Sir James Burgess (Ralph Richardson) and Gloria Rowe (Rachel Roberts), takes a turn at testing his faith. Mick keeps smiling at all of them, and they keep taking his trust.
