“The Love That Lifted a Man to Paradise......and Hurled Him Back to Earth Again”

Philip Carey (Leslie Howard) is a young man with a clubfoot who wants, more than anything, to be loved by someone who does not return it. He finds her in Mildred Rogers (Bette Davis), a waitress who treats his attention as an irritation and gives him nothing back. John Cromwell holds the camera on Davis's flat, bored face as Howard watches her, his hopeful eyes fixed on a woman who will not look at him.
