Why does a poor preacher's son turn away from the pulpit his father has spent a lifetime in? Ethan Wilkins (Walter Huston) ministers to souls for little pay, while his boy Jason (James Stewart) wants to be a doctor and tend bodies instead. Clarence Brown sets their quarrel in the years around the Civil War, with Mary (Beulah Bondi) caught between them, her love for both and her own comfort at risk.
