Why does a quick-witted drifter keep hauling a huge, simple-minded man from one job to the next? George Milton (Burgess Meredith) and Lennie Small (Lon Chaney Jr.) arrive at a ranch in Depression-era America, holding on to the dream of owning a place of their own. Lewis Milestone's film is about how little a poor man is allowed to keep, and how much he will give up to hold onto it.
