George Milton (Gary Sinise) is a drifter in Depression-era America, and he travels with Lennie Small (John Malkovich), a gentle giant with a child's mind who needs George to think for him. They hire on to work the fields and save what they can toward a piece of land of their own. Sinise directs from Horton Foote's script, and the film leaves the two of them the way Steinbeck did, dreaming out loud.
