Oh! What a Lovely War

(1969)Directed by Richard Attenborough144 min · GComedy, Music, War
“The ever popular war games. With songs, battles & a few jokes.”

It is the summer of 1914, and the working-class Smith family has sent its five sons off to a war everyone expects to be short and cheerful. Richard Attenborough, in his first film as director, stages the fighting as a music-hall revue, with Maggie Smith as a Music Hall Star and Laurence Olivier as Field Marshal Sir John French. The soldiers sing their way toward the trenches, and the songs keep running into what the boys find waiting there.
