On Guard
“Some things are worth dying for”
Henri de Lagardère (Daniel Auteuil) is a skilled swordsman in 17th-century France, under Louis XIII, and a loyal friend to the Duke of Nevers (Vincent Perez). When the duke is struck down by his cousin, Count Gonzague (Fabrice Luchini), Lagardère is left with a vow of vengeance and the duke's infant daughter to protect. Philippe de Broca, adapting Paul Féval's 1858 novel, stages the duels and chases as a brisk, crowd-pleasing stage show.
