Marjorie "Marjie" Winfield (Doris Day), a tomboy in turn-of-the-century Indiana, would rather play ball than learn to dance, but the new neighbor across the street has changed her mind. William Sherman (Gordon MacRae) doesn't believe in marriage or money, which does not sit well with her father, the vice president of the local bank. Roy Del Ruth sets it in a small town, and the two of them keep finding reasons to cross that street.
