On the Waterfront

(1954)Directed by Elia Kazan108 minCrime, Drama, Romance
“The man lived by the jungle law of the docks!”

On the docks of Hoboken, New Jersey, a longshoreman's work depends on the goodwill of Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb), the union boss who runs the hiring line and everything else. Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando), a former prizefighter, drifts into a murder case, and Edie Doyle (Eva Marie Saint) and Father Barry (Karl Malden) both want him to talk. Elia Kazan shot it in black and white, with Leonard Bernstein's score playing over the dock and the gray water.
