Dek (Rhys Ifans) proposes to his girlfriend Shirley (Shirley Henderson) on live television, a big public gesture meant to settle things with her and her 12-year-old daughter Marlene. Then Jimmy (Robert Carlyle), Marlene's long-absent father, turns up in Nottingham, and Shane Meadows sets the two men in the same small world. Dek wants to be the man Shirley chose, and Jimmy wants back into a life he walked out of.
