Jill (Claudia Cardinale) steps off the train at Flagstone in Arizona, ready to start a new life while the railroad crews push on toward the sea. Sergio Leone sets her among hired guns and rival schemers, Frank (Henry Fonda), 'Cheyenne' (Jason Robards) and 'Harmonica' (Charles Bronson) among them, each with a stake in the land the tracks will cross. The film is about a way of living that is giving way to the railroad.
