Tumak (Victor Mature), a young cave man of the brutal Rock Tribe, is driven out by his father Akhoba (Lon Chaney Jr.) and wanders into the territory of the peaceful Shell Tribe. There he meets Loana (Carole Landis), the chief's daughter, and finds a people who live very differently from his own. Hal Roach and Hal Roach, Jr. follow him through a world of fighting and hunger, and Tumak must decide whether to carry the Shell Tribe's ways back to his people.
