A civil war is tearing through medieval Japan, and a Woman (Nobuko Otowa) and her daughter-in-law (Jitsuko Yoshimura) live alone in a swamp, killing stray samurai and selling what they carry. When Hachi (Kei Satō) comes back from the fighting with news that Kichi is dead, he becomes a wedge between them. Kaneto Shindō fills the frame with swaying reeds, so the women are always half hidden and the dread has nowhere to go.
