Duke Gifford (John Wayne) is second in command of the USS Thunderfish, a submarine whose torpedoes keep exploding too early or not at all. He is also trying to win back his ex-wife Mary (Patricia Neal), a nurse, who has been seeing a navy flier named Bob (Philip Carey). The trouble is that Bob is the younger brother of Duke's commanding officer. George Waggner keeps the pictures moving between the cramped boat and the shore, with the war pressing on both.
