J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) is a theoretical physicist whom the US Army puts in charge of the Los Alamos Laboratory, where scientists are racing to build the first atomic bomb during World War II. Christopher Nolan moves between his student years, his work for General Leslie Groves (Matt Damon), and the 1954 security hearing that questions him. Through all of it stands Kitty (Emily Blunt), his wife, who watches the man she married carry the project home.
