Origin

Isabel Wilkerson (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor), an author with a book already behind her, wants to name the thing that sorts people into ranks. Her research takes her through Germany, India and the United States, while loss lands in her own family, including her cousin Marion (Niecy Nash-Betts). DuVernay builds the film from Wilkerson's travels and her book, moving between her work and her life without a clear line between them.
