Orpheus

Orphée (Jean Marais) is a celebrated poet in postwar Paris, scorned by the young crowd on the Left Bank and married to Eurydice (Marie Déa). He is also drawn to a mysterious princess (María Casares), and in search of inspiration he follows her out of the living world and into the land of the dead. Jean Cocteau, adapting his own 1926 play, sets the old Greek myth in contemporary Paris and makes the underworld feel like a place you could walk into.
