Osama

“To save her family a girl must become a boy”

A girl of about twelve (Marina Golbahari) lives with her mother (Zubaida Sahar) and grandmother in Afghanistan under the Taliban, where women are barred from work and from walking the streets alone. Her family has no men left to earn for them, so she cuts her hair and goes out as a boy named Osama. Siddiq Barmak shot it in Afghanistan itself, the first film made there since the Taliban banned filmmaking in 1996.
