Oscar and Lucinda

(1997)Directed by Gillian Armstrong132 min · RDrama, Romance
“They dared to play the game of love, faith, and chance.”

Oscar Hopkins (Ralph Fiennes), raised under a harsh evangelist father, becomes an Anglican minister and sails for Australia, carrying a secret faith in gambling. On the ship he meets Lucinda Leplastrier (Cate Blanchett), an heiress returning from London with a glass factory waiting for her at home. They share an obsession, and they make a wager. Gillian Armstrong films the two of them with a restraint that keeps the longing close to the surface.
