“Orson Welles' magnificent screening of Shakespeare's immortal tragedy”

Othello (Orson Welles), a Moorish general in service to Venice, has just married Desdemona (Suzanne Cloutier) and wants nothing more than to keep what he has won. His ensign Iago (Micheál Mac Liammóir) is bitter, and he begins feeding his commander small, quiet suspicions about his wife. Welles adapts Shakespeare's play, and what it lays out, plainly, is how jealousy can eat through a marriage that began in trust.
