“A Romance of the Shining Rails”

Bill White (Grant Withers) is a railroad engineer who spends his days on the line and his nights at the boarding house, where his friend Jack Kulper (Regis Toomey) and Jack's wife Lily (Mary Astor) set a place for him at their table. William A. Wellman gives the story the grit of working men, with Eddie Bailey (James Cagney) in the supporting cast. Bill sits across from Lily, the lamp low, and neither of them looks at Jack.
