David Mulcahey (Jesse Plemons) is a struggling comedy writer, newly split from his boyfriend, who moves from New York back to Sacramento to help his sick mother. Chris Kelly, drawing on his own family, puts David under the same roof as his conservative father and his two much younger sisters for the first time in ten years. His mother Joanne (Molly Shannon) is getting worse, and David has a short time to be useful to her and convince everyone he is doing okay.
