In 1967 Los Angeles, Alice Zander (Elizabeth Reaser), a widow, runs a séance business out of her home, faking messages from the dead for grieving customers. Her daughters Paulina (Annalise Basso) and Doris (Lulu Wilson) help with the act, and Mike Flanagan opens with a Ouija board Alice brings in to draw more clients. The family has built its living on pretending to speak with the dead, and the film is about what happens when a spirit finally answers.
