“The children's story that is not for children...”

Seven children in a house in Britain bury their mother and tell no one she has died, going on as if she still lies upstairs. Diana (Pamela Franklin) is among the older ones holding the arrangement together, until the father none of them remember turns up at the door as Charlie Hook (Dirk Bogarde). Jack Clayton sets him down in the middle of that secret, and if the wrong person finds out, the children lose the house and each other.
