Emily Webb (Martha Scott) wants to leave Grover's Corners someday and make a name for herself, though she is happy enough next door to George Gibbs (William Holden), the doctor's son. Sam Wood follows the two families through ordinary mornings and evenings in a small New Hampshire town in the early 1900s. Emily grows up in the same kitchens and streets she once thought she would outgrow.
