Out of the Fog

(1941)Directed by Anatole Litvak85 minCrime, Thriller
“It's lightning and thunder! It's Lupino and Garfield!”

Harold Goff (John Garfield) works the Brooklyn piers, bullying boat-owners into paying him protection money, and two worn-out fishermen have had enough of handing it over. Rather than go to the police, Jonah Goodwin (Thomas Mitchell) and his friend Propotkin (George Tobias) start talking about getting rid of him themselves. Anatole Litvak, adapting Irwin Shaw's play, keeps the story close to the waterfront and the ordinary people who work it.
