Robert Bruce, Earl of Carrick (Chris Pine), wants his country free of English rule, and by 1304 he has sworn loyalty to the English king while quietly planning otherwise. Once he is crowned King of Scotland, he is hunted and driven into exile, with James Douglas (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) among those who follow him. David Mackenzie shoots the fighting in close, muddy, hand-to-hand scrapes rather than from a distance.
