“Life... what a sweet, cruel, silly thing.”

Piero Mansani (Edoardo Gabbriellini) grows up in a working-class neighborhood of Livorno, and he learns most of what he knows the hard way. The film follows him from a boy of thirteen (Malcolm Lunghi) toward fatherhood, with the teacher Giovanna Fornari (Nicoletta Braschi) and the classmate Susy Susini (Claudia Pandolfi) turning up along the way. Paolo Virzì leaves Piero on the Livorno streets, still working out what comes next.
