Carolina (Marieta Severo) is fifty, and she keeps going back to the night she was twenty. She pictures her younger self, Carolina Jovem (Débora Falabella), standing at the ball where she met Luis Cláudio (Antônio Fagundes), the man she married and raised children with. Daniel Filho has her ask what would have followed if she had phoned a friend and gone to the theater, and she answers it herself, one possible life after another.
