In 1917, Stan (Stan Laurel) and Ollie (Oliver Hardy) are drafted into the U.S. Army, where they make friends with a fellow soldier named Eddie Smith (Don Dillaway). After the war they carry his small daughter (Jacquie Lyn) to New York, to find her family, and discover that the city holds a great many people named Smith. George Marshall and Ray McCarey send the two men door to door with a child who has quietly become theirs.
