“In a town this bad, it's no use being good.”

Harry Barber (Woody Harrelson) walks out of prison after two years behind bars on a charge that never should have stuck. Rhea Malroux (Elisabeth Shue), the young wife of a dying millionaire, offers him a job: help her fake the kidnapping of her stepdaughter and split the ransom. Volker Schlöndorff keeps Harry at the center of it, a man who wants his lost years back and takes the first offer that smells like money.
