Adrienne Pargiter (Glenn Close), held with other women in a Japanese prison camp on Sumatra during World War II, wants a way to keep them human. She turns to music, and with Daisy Drummond (Pauline Collins) and others she begins a vocal orchestra, English, American, Dutch and Australian voices rehearsing together. Bruce Beresford follows Adrienne as the singing becomes the thing she is willing to be punished for.
