“It could happen to you.”

Gil Buckman (Steve Martin) is trying to hold his own household together, with a son who needs attention, a family that keeps landing on his doorstep, and a job that wants more of him. Ron Howard follows the Buckmans through the daily crises of raising children, from estranged relatives to a teenager pulling away. Gil's father Frank (Jason Robards) and his sister Helen (Dianne Wiest) are still working out, long after childhood, what each of them owes the other.
