“Who do you become when you can't be yourself?”

Alike (Adepero Oduye) is seventeen, a poet in Brooklyn, and she wants to be seen for who she is. She slips out with her friend Laura (Pernell Walker) to nightclubs, then changes her clothes on the bus home before she reaches the house where her parents wait. Dee Rees shoots those nights and that apartment so closely that you can feel what each one asks of her.
