Lalita (Vidya Balan) and Shekhar (Saif Ali Khan) have known each other since they were children, and both quietly assume they will marry. Shekhar's father, Navinchandra Roy, has other plans, and Shekhar's own suspicions about Lalita begin to wedge the two apart. Pradeep Sarkar, in his first feature, adapts Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1914 novel as a musical, letting the songs carry what the characters leave unsaid.
