Giacobbe (Pierre Clémenti) goes through his days alone until a second Giacobbe appears, a double who looks exactly like him. He decides to use this other self to act out the things he has only dreamed. Bertolucci pulls the whole film out of that one encounter and treats Giacobbe's sense of reality as a thing that can be rearranged, with the energy of a director trying every trick he has.
