“You'll meet her at the roughest parties ...with the toughest guys in town!”

Tommy Farrell (Robert Taylor) has built a career defending mobsters, winning their trials for Rico Angelo (Lee J. Cobb) and not asking much else. Then a showgirl, Vicki Gaye (Cyd Charisse), turns up at one of the mob's parties, and he starts to want out. Nicholas Ray fills the CinemaScope frame with rich color and nightclub glitter, while Tommy finds that Rico has no plans to let him walk away.
