Passage to Marseille

(1944)Directed by Michael Curtiz109 min · PGAdventure, Drama, War
“Warner Bros. Triumph”

Why a French journalist like Jean Matrac (Humphrey Bogart) has given up his wife and his safe life to fight the Nazis is the question the film keeps circling, through Captain Freycinet (Claude Rains) and a crew of men with their own reasons for being aboard. Michael Curtiz moves it fast, with Max Steiner's score pushing every scene forward. Underneath is a plain idea: freedom costs a person the things they love most.
