Passing
“Nothing is black and white.”
Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson) is a Black woman living a settled life in 1920s New York City until she crosses paths with Clare Kendry (Ruth Negga), a childhood friend now passing as white. Rebecca Hall, in her first feature as director, adapts Nella Larsen's 1929 novel and shoots it in black-and-white. Clare keeps turning up in Irene's world, and the two women circle each other with a closeness that neither is ready to name.
