Pastoral: To Die in the Country

(1974)Directed by Shūji Terayama101 minFantasy, Drama

Shuji (Kantarō Suga) is a film director stuck halfway through a picture about his own boyhood in a mountain village in rural Japan. When he tries to restage those years, Young Shuji (Hiroyuki Takano) pushes back against the version he is being handed. Shūji Terayama draws the film from his own tanka poems, and the director and the boy end up in the same frame.
