Pat Garrett (James Coburn) wants a quiet, respectable future, and the cattle barons of New Mexico will give him one if he takes a badge and hunts down his old friend Billy the Kid (Kris Kristofferson). Sam Peckinpah puts two former partners on opposite sides of the law, with Garrett growing older and Billy still riding free. The price of the job is a friendship, and Garrett knows it.
