Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) is a French Army officer in 1916 who commands soldiers ordered into an attack that cannot succeed. When his men refuse to keep advancing, the generals, Mireau (George Macready) and Broulard (Adolphe Menjou), pick three of them to be tried for cowardice. Stanley Kubrick follows Dax into the court-martial, where he must defend a corporal, Paris (Ralph Meeker), and two others whose lives depend on his argument.
