Pearls of the Deep
Five directors each take one of Bohumil Hrabal's short stories, and no single thread holds them together. A trip to the motorcycle races ends in drunkenness and death, two old men invent false lives for themselves, and insurance agents call on a painter who keeps goats. Chytilová and Jireš are two of the five, and the segments sit side by side, a wedding party in one, a working-class boy and a Roma girl in another.
