Penthouse

(1933)Directed by W.S. Van Dyke88 minCrime, Drama, Mystery
“A strange romance in a penthouse- a sky high love-nest! A girl from nowhere bringing drama that screamed from the headlines!”

Jackson Durant (Warner Baxter) is a lawyer with a penthouse apartment, and he sets out to pin a murder on the gangster Jim Crelliman. His best source is Gertie Waxted (Myrna Loy), a call girl who has lived under Crelliman's thumb long enough to know how his rackets run. If he finds out she is talking, her life is in danger. W.S. Van Dyke directs it as a pre-Code crime picture, with Charles Butterworth as Durant's butler and the dialogue left unscrubbed.
