Kim Yeong-ho (Sul Kyung-gu) is a cold, unhappy man who shows up uninvited at a twenty-year reunion in the spring of 1999 and spoils the mood for everyone. He climbs onto a railroad bridge, and from there the story runs backward through seven episodes of his life, ending at the young man he used to be, alongside Yun Sun-im (Moon So-ri). Lee Chang-dong moves the film year by year in reverse, so each earlier scene changes how the one before it looks.
