Persepolis

“The film Iran didn't want the world to see.”

In Tehran in the 1970s, a girl named Marji (Gabrielle Lopes Benites) grows up in an idealistic family that expects the Shah to fall. Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud animate her memories in stark black and white, drawn from Satrapi's own graphic novel. When the revolution arrives and a new regime tightens its grip, Marji leans hardest on her grandmother (Danielle Darrieux), who tells her plainly how to live.
