The stage actress Elisabet Vogler (Liv Ullmann) has stopped speaking, and the doctors can find nothing wrong with her. Alma (Bibi Andersson), the young nurse assigned to her, takes her to a cottage, where she fills the silence with talk about her own life, and no answer comes. Ingmar Bergman builds the film around two faces and one unanswered voice, and the line between nurse and patient grows harder to see.
