“A Gripping Noirish Study of Treachery, Identity and Survival.”

Nelly Lenz (Nina Hoss), a cabaret singer who survived Auschwitz, comes home to Berlin with a rebuilt face and one aim: to find her husband and learn whether he betrayed her. Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld) does not recognize her. He only sees a likeness he can use, a stand-in who might help him claim his wife's inheritance. Christian Petzold sets this in the ruins after the war, where a person can be seen and still not be known.
